The New Year Bonanza...

Months of preparation, some moments of prelaunch anxiety and then three years of bedlam, that’s what happened when Conditional Access System (CAS) was to be implemented in 2003. Circa 2006, and cable operators, broadcasters, instrument suppliers et al can be seen with the same prelaunch anxiety. However, three years of long wait has left skepticism in their voices. Many are suspicious that the fate with which CAS met three years back might as well strike back again.

Earlier this year, Delhi High Court had instructed to implement CAS in some localities of Delhi, Mumbai, and Kolkata (it is already operational in Chennai) by December 31, 2006. With that it seemed that the battle between broadcasters and cable operators has finally come to rest. But, is the deadline of December 31 practical? Have all issues been sorted out or something can yet again defeat this CAS(e)? With just about a month to go in the final roll out, 4Ps B&M decided to do a status check…
